This one was the first songs written for my second album. I am a fan of polyrhythm, so Deus Lux has some 4 vs 3, which created what Pat Neil (guitarist on the song) called “a nice swing”. I also wanted to have more piano on this album, so the opening arpeggio worked beautifully on the piano. The notes in that line foreshadow the chord structure that follows. The bass line was created on the Chapman Stick.
This song is a good illustration of why I bought the stick. I’ve been playing piano since I was nine, and I tend to drift into well worn paths when I compose on a keyboard. Writing music on the stick breaks me out of that and into new creative territory.
The guitar part is derived from the bassline, minus about half the notes.
Lyrically, I started out looking for a verse in the Bible that had to do with walking in the light. There is a verse that speaks of exactly that in 1 John 1:7. However, for the purposes of this song, it didn’t work. I modified my search to just the word “light” and found what I needed just a couple verses earlier in 1 John 1:5b, “God is light, in Him is no darkness at all.”
When the drums make their entrance with the bells reiterating the melody, it’s just electrifying to me. When I heard that the first time, I knew this was going to be a keeper.
